This book is not *intended* for inexperienced users, therefore it’s not surprise it might also be confusing to the same group. The last reviewer answered his own complaint: if you don’t know Photoshop at all, buy a cookie cutter / how-to book like those from Deke McLelland or even Scott Kelby. If you’re looking for a comprehensive view of the application from a professional photography perspective, buy this book. You’re not likely to be disappointed.Among all the Photoshop books which attempt to detail all aspects of the digital photography workflow (from hardware to color management to editing techniques), Martin Evening’s books are among the very best.He also does make a habit of updating content wherever practical from edition to edition. Obviously it’s silly for an author to change every screenshot and example for every edition. When you find one that works well for illustrating a particular technique, you keep it until the tool in question changes. If it isn’t broken….And to say this is poorly written reflects more on the commentator’s reading comprehension ability, than the author’s writing ability. Evening’s work is very accessible, assuming you already know the basics of Photoshop. The only complain I have about this book is that I would like him to focus a little more on facial retouching aspects, as it’s obviously a big part of his business. I’m sure he has more to share on that topic. Hopefully next edition….

Photoshop for Photographers is highly inspiring for me. During the four weeks I posess a copy of it I hardly did other things then discovering more and more on Photoshop… It is like discovering the world (which is my second job as a tourleader and travel journalist/photographer, next to my daily work as a photographer and editor/desktoppublisher).Although I am working with Adobe Photoshop for over ten years as a photographer and desktoppublisher Martin Evening showed me a number of new methods which I could not find in other books on this program. Especially the extensive chapters on Color Correction, Color Management and Output for Print were very interesting to me; but every chapter contains interesting stuff. I am convinced that there is no better book on this subject, with the things together that belong together (for example colorcorrection) and not a full technical description of menu-item by menu-item which in daily practice are used mixed up. I am sure that Photoshop for Photographers is very close to the way photographers (amateur and pro) think and work. This is not such a dull computerbook, from which there are already too much. Even for a non-native English-speaker as I this book is written in a very clear and understandable language. The fullcolor examples and how to’s that are mixed througout the book are very instructive and inviting to try it yourself.
Martin Evening tried to keep a highly complex program simple for his readers. Meanwhile his texts stimulated me to try to understand how Photoshop really works (those technical backgrounds are not inside, to keep the book understandable for starters. And that is how it should be).
I wish you a lot of photo-editing fun!

I was a very early adopter of Photoshop and used it extensivly for 10 years until I decided to try something a little different (farming) a couple of years ago. Now I have decided to get back into the game and in preperation I read four of the most current books on Photoshop.Martin Evenings book is truly incredible for both the level of detail and the breadth of the material presented. I read this book cover to cover and then picked it up a week later and read sections of interest again. This is not a book for those who want to gloss over the subject, it is a book for serious imagers who want to play at the top of their profession.Honestly this book put to shame the other books that I read which tended towards little nuggets of information and specific techniques rather then presenting a solid understanding of how Photoshop works and the implication of not only technique but fundamentals like workflow, color management, planning for re-purposing files and so on.It is a little humbling to know that there are wizards like Martin Evening out in the marketplace. This book is incredible.

I have a stack of the latest Phtooshop CS books by the best in the industry and have updataded myself over the last five years with such books. All have their strenghts and weaknesses.

However if I had to recommend only one book it would be Martin Evening’s Photoshop for photographers. Some other more vocal authors might like to think their books are Bibles for Photoshop but simply are no match overall for this book.

No other book I own is better presented or reproduced. A most usefull bonus is the enclosed CD with several Quick Time movies which cover subjects in great detail which are areso easy to absorb.

Four stars is an insult to the best Photoshop book on the market to date period. The price of this book IMHO is incredible value for money.

I purchased this book immediately after seeing Martin at a Digital Design conference. As an “old school” (mind you, I graduated art school in 1998) photographer, I admit hesitation when dealing with digital cameras. However, Martin’s techniques combine the genius of Photoshop with the “old school” craft of traditional photography.

For instance, the use of the MacBeth Color Checker Chart blew me away. This is ordinarily used with film cameras. To see traditional items and techniques used in digital media is both amazing and ground breaking. He has mastered the art of fine color correction and digital imaging and this book has changed the way I use Photoshop forever.

Review by SamC for Casebook Episode 1

“Casebook doesn’t just combine the best elements of both the hidden object and adventure game genres into one intriguing whole, couched in darker, more mature trappings than the average mainstream offering. It also introduces special technology that allows you to wander videotaped crime scenes, complete with real-life actors and locations, as if you were actually an investigator taking part firsthand in an episode of Bones or CSI.

Long story short: Two innocent children have gone missing, and the list of suspects and possible motives behind the kidnapping is trumped only by the amount of clues you’ll have to sift through to identify the culprit. Partnered with Detective James Burton, played by a real (and surprisingly engaging) person who helps provide background and leads, you assume the role of a rookie gumshoe out to crack the case.

Along the way, you’ll encounter shady characters of all sorts, many of whom star prominently in excellently played and narrated interrogation scenes or interstitial sequences, with over half an hour of video featured in total. Despite a few quality control issues – even at a whopping 937MB in size, film quality in varying scenes alternates between spectacular and blurry – let’s be honest: It’s still an impressive feat, to say the least.

More surprising though, are actual crime scenes – bedrooms, refineries, etc. – themselves, which offer panoramic views of each location composed from digital film stock. Click the left mouse button, and you’ll actually stroll through them in real-time, as if you really were looking through the eyes of the main character.

Color us impressed; whereas most competitors would force you to watch a canned movie clip before taking another action, here, it’s as if a camera smoothly pans to shift one’s perspective on-command. In other words, while you wander past piles of objects from frayed rope links to discarded bottles, and look under covers for stray hairs or scour floors for footprints, the video reel basically pauses and seamlessly resumes on-command. Not too shabby, even if each area you’ll explore is of limited size and scope, and visuals quickly turn muddy when viewed a distance.

As for play itself, the action mostly consists of examining these nicely-portrayed locales in first-person, right-clicking to pull out your camera when an object of interest is spotted. Useful items are then highlighted in a viewfinder that can be zoomed in and out or maneuvered as needed to snap a shot, with images filed away in your digicam’s internal storage bank. Once full, you can exit to a crime scene van, where photos are fed into a computer and your Scottish-accented pal back at the lab helps decide what’s of importance and which items are simply red herrings. (And believe us, there’s plenty of false leads…)

Afterwards, multiple mini-games – dusting for fingerprints, triangulating phone feeds, spinning your mouse to run test tubes through a centrifuge, generating water ripples to separate strands of DNA – are played. Once done, you’re left with snapshots that represent information and clues directly relevant to the case. These pictures are then placed in a folder, where leads can be clicked on and linked to further the investigation.

Thankfully, like frequent story interludes (which one can optionally skip if you’re not into all that wordy exposition), Burton and the boys at HQ are there to provide regular insight or tips. You can also hold down the “I” key (for intuition, natch) in a pinch, causing the game to point you towards any evidence you may have overlooked.

Parents should be aware: Featuring mature themes such as drinking, violence and the use of sedatives to subdue helpless victims, the game isn’t a good fit for younger audiences. But it’s no worse than anything you’d see on TV, and – high degree of repetition and backtracking aside – gets by mainly on the quality of its storytelling and presentation, in fact.

Bearing this in mind, if you find yourself hard-pressed to pull away from the average episode of Law & Order: SVU or Without a Trace, hey… Don’t be afraid to give Casebook a shot. Just be aware that, like the serials from which it draws inspiration, this title – first in a series of episodic outings – is guaranteed to prove short, sweet, topsy-turvy in parts and slightly morbid, but sure to have you coming back for more.”

This is a crime solver game. It plays directly from the hard disk after installation from the cd-rom.

The unique feature is the amount of detail available from the video presentation. Basically, you play as a rookie detective examining crime scenes to uncover evidence. Your experienced partner gives occasional verbal tips. Evidence is collected in the form of pictures, taken by yourself within the game. The pictures are processed in several ways, as befits their subject matter, i.e. DNA, trace materials, fingerprints etc…

I had previously downloaded Episode 0 from the developer’s website and enjoyed playing that game. Because I have only a dial-up connection, the issue of this cd-rom was a big attraction. I do recommend trying the free episode before purchasing this game. It gives the flavour and mechanics of the purchased game. The free episode is also on the cd-rom.

The graphics are acceptable, the story is good and holds interest throughout. What starts out as a kidnapping turns to a murder hunt later on. Sound is fine.

I had a problem with some of the videos during the game. It turns out that Mumbo Jumbo got the specs wrong. The downloaded games have lower details (which play on my machine) and the cd-rom has higher details (which do not). This applies to only some of the videos. Despite the video problem I managed to complete the game, but only after enquiring at the developer’s site about another problem. I reached the point where I had filled all the available photo folders and needed to add one more to progress the game. This necessitated emailing the save file to the developer who edited it and sent it back. Quick and friendly service from the developer minimised the disruption. The free episode on the disk also failed to show the videos.

So, in summary, a good game with one possible game stopping flaw. Beware of incorrect spec information. You get two games for your money.

For the record, my video card is an FX5200 with 256 Mb graphic memory. My processor, AMD 1.2G, 1G RAM. You need better than these to run this game.
